What are the benefits for my dog?

Dogs young and old can exercise or convalesce in a safe, controlled environment. Swimming can be used as part of a planned fitness program, weight control, and for post-operative dogs Hydrotherapy removes the weight loading on the injured limb and will enable the gradual rebuilding of wasted muscle. It reduces the pain and can accelerate recovery after surgery.

Exercise without stress

Swimming is an excellent form of exercise because most of the muscles normally used in movement are involved – without the stresses caused by running on hard ground. Swimming allows the strengthening of muscles while avoiding potentially harmful concussion.
As with any fitness programme, you should expect to start gently and increase over time. Don’t be surprised if your dog only swims for a few minutes or a few short bursts to begin with. Gradually, as their fitness improves, they will be able to swim longer with fewer rests.

Lungs

Under water, the chest is under pressure from the weight of the water squeezing inwards. This means that every breath requires more effort – thus improving the respiratory system.
How many sessions does my dog need?

It depends on your dog’s condition and level of fitness. This is something we can discuss during the session.

How long does each session take?

Sessions are half an hour each. Your dog will not be swimming for the whole session as rest, other therapies and drying time are included.

What happens during a session?

After discussing with you what your dogs needs are we will fit your dog with a buoyancy jacket and accompany your dog to the pool where we closely monitor them. Some dogs do not need a buoyancy jacket at they are naturally good swimmers. If you require we can design a swimming program to suit your dog.

What is the temperature of the water?
The pool is heated but is lower than body temperature to enable the dog to move in comfort but without the risk of exhaustion.

What conditions are most commonly treated?

  • Arthritis
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Post-op recovery
  • Obesity
My dog is overweight. Can the therapy help with the weight loss my vet has recommended?

Yes, many dogs attend and reach target weight when hydrotherapy is used in conjunction with a suitable diet.

Robbie Mc Kay is our Hydrotherapy (Dog Pool) Manager he will be happy to discuss any general concerns that you may have. Should your dog have a pre existing medical problem you will need to fill out our Veterinary information form please have your Vet fill in the relevant information so we can offer you the best possible care.
